Pune-based Northway launches Maruti Ignis electric conversion kit – overall cost to be cheaper than Tata Nexon EV sales

A leading name in EV R&D and EV conversion kits, Pune based Northway has launched an EV conversion kit for Maruti Ignis. The model used for this project is the 2022 Ignis Alpha MT variant. The total cost of the kit and the car is Rs 12.5 lakh for the standard range (120 km) kit and Rs 14.5 lakh for the long range (240 km) kit.

The conversion kit will be available for the Ignis MT 2021 and later models. Northway also offers electric conversion kits for other vehicles like Swift DZire and Tata Ace.

Maruti Ignis Electric with Manual Transmission

Speaking of electric cars, it is hard to imagine that it will have anything other than an automatic transmission. However, the people of Northway have dared to deviate from established industry standards. Their pre-converted Maruti Ignis Electric has been equipped with a manual transmission, which offers a host of benefits.

Under real-world conditions, the Ignis EV with a manual transmission can supply additional torque when needed. This can come in handy in situations like heavy traffic when one needs to accelerate from a stop position. Take a look at the first drive experience Northway shared in the video below.

It can also be useful when overtaking another vehicle, especially when the car is going downhill. The Ignis EV with manual transmission will appeal to even those who love the experience of changing gears.

Another advantage is that the manual transmission can supply braking power. For this, users just need to shift to other gear like lower gear. This in turn will recharge the battery through the regenerative braking system installed in the car. In traffic conditions and during downhill travel in mountainous areas, using a lower gear as a braking aid can lead to a tangible improvement in range.

Maruti Ignis Electric also caters to the needs of those who prefer automatic transmission. Though the car has a manual transmission, there is no compulsion that the users will have to change gears every time they want to increase the speed. For the automatic experience, users only need to use the car in top gear such as third and fourth gear. In this way the car will act like an automatic electric car.

Maruti Ignis Electric – Range & Specs

The pre-converted Maruti Suzuki Ignis EV is available with two battery configurations. With drive whistle, the maximum range is 120 km. This may work for people who plan to use the car only for city-specific commutes.

Users looking for a longer distance can opt for the Inter CT, which offers 240 kms. The top speed of the car is estimated at 140 kmph. It generates a maximum torque of 170 Nm. The car can be charged at home or at any of the available charging stations. Charging time is in the range of 3-7 hours.

The main thing to note here is that the OEM warranty will be void once the car is converted to electric. The warranty for the conversion kit is 60,000 km or 2 years, whichever is earlier. The converted car is road-legal, as all necessary approvals and documents will be provided by the RTO. However, users will not be eligible for any subsidy, as there is currently no such rule for EV retro fit kits.
